Dinant statement on “Brisas del Aguán” plantation

Tegucigalpa, Honduras, April 27, 2015: At 12pm local time today, Corporación Dinant was made aware that an employee of the Brisas del Aguán African Palm plantation in the Bajo Aguán had been shot and killed by a member of the public who had entered the premises carrying a firearm. Our thoughts and prayers are with the deceased man’s family and friends at this tragic time. In addition to helping the police with their investigation, Dinant has begun an internal enquiry to establish how a member of the public was able to carry a firearm onto Dinant’s plantation against a strict company policy prohibiting all weapons and with mandatory spot checks at all entrances. Dinant takes the safety and security of its employees extremely seriously, and we are reviewing our internal procedures to see what, if anything, can be done to prevent future incidents of this nature. We shall release more information as and when it becomes available, and as permitted by the authorities conducting the investigation. Notes Uniquely in Honduras, Dinant has removed all firearms from the security guards at its plantations, extraction mills and manufacturing plants. All security men and women at these facilities now carry only a baton, whistle and cell phone, while wearing a high-visibility vest. Without exception, the only firearms permitted at these facilities are those carried by the security guards employed by the independent commercial bank located within Dinant’s extraction mill in Aguán, which provides banking services to the independent producers who supply this mill.
